Sita BIbaha Panchami

Janakpur is one of the famous cities of Nepal when it comes to Hindu pilgrimage because of the sacred Janaki Mandir. The city receives thousands of pilgrims every year and the best time to visit the city is at a festival called Sita Bibaha Panchami. It falls in November or December depending upon the lunar calendar. The day is celebrated as the marriage anniversary of Goddess Sita with Lord Rama.

The pilgrims gather from different corners of Nepal and India to attend the traditional marriage anniversary. On this day, various rituals are performed along with traditional and exciting street performance that brings a crowd of devotees and visitors together.

The festival takes place on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Margasirsha month and lasts for one day. A grand puja is scheduled for this day in the temple and every year a wedding procession takes place from Ayodhya to the temple. The Province No. 2 Government also hosts the lunch reception for the participants of the wedding.

Because of the extreme crowd, more than four thousand security personnel are deployed in the area and the number is increasing every year. The charm of the festival is high and brings visitors, tourists, and even non-religious people in the city. Four-wheelers are not allowed in the periphery during the event and no shops can sell liquor and meat items on the wedding day.

Out of several rituals of the wedding, some are Tilakotsav, Matkor, Swoyambar, and Bibaha. It is identical to a marriage ceremony in the Mithila culture. The act of marriage is performed between the statues of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita which are decorated and placed in the Bahrabigha Ground.

Devotees perform holy bath in a sacred river or pond, offer worship, and make resolutions. The temple is full of decorations with lights and flowers. One can hear the singing of hymns and mantras and the environment gives the vibes of a real marriage. Every act is done with purity and everything is well-managed by professionals.

The ceremony is witnessed by Federal Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation along with other cabinet ministers of the Province No. 2. Indian Ministers are also invited to make the ceremony mutual of both countries and to make it grand in all possible ways.
